It is with great honour to announce that Umthathi Training Project has received a donation of R5000.00 from the Rhode University Green Fund (RUGF). Umthathi’s vision of encouraging human wellbeing by working with vulnerable communities to build a sustainable future, has favoured the Organisation in the selection process and criteria that is very consistent with the vision of of the RUGF.
The money for the award was raised during the Fund committee’s annual Makana Green Fun Run that was held on 15 March 2015. Prof Fred Ellery, Convenor of Green Fund, Rhodes University Environmental Committee, addressed the gathering that took place on 21 May 2015 at Umthathi House in Ext 7. He spoke very high of the value of the work done by Umthathi, where South Africa has a Human Development Index of 0.66 and an ecological footprint of 2.3. This means that our performance as South Africans is poor when it comes to human development despite living beyond the Earth’s capacity to sustain us.
Umthathi’s Director of Operations, Monica Canca, was pleased to accept the award on behalf of the organisation and praised the RUGF for their work in bringing the communities to gather. She highlighted that it was very important to acknowledge the great work of increasing understanding amoung communities of Green issues, and developing their knowledge in a two-way process.
It was a great pleasure to also receive choral performance from Ntsika Senior Secondary School in Ext 7, Joza, whom had the highest number of participation during the Fun Run.
Umthathi would like send a warm word of thank you to RUGF, all the community members and schools that participated in this initiative, all your hard work and efforts towards raising this money are highly appreciated and we are greatful to be beneficiaries of such an initiative.
